So, things haven’t been going very well for me lately. Between Lila getting her fourth cold in the last two months, and acquiring not one, not two, but FIVE chickens – who take it upon themselves to find new escape routes everyday, which pleases my dog no end but fails to get a smile out of me, as well as a trip to the emergency room AND a late-night freak out due to an adverse antibiotic reaction, and then my entire household getting sick too, just to put a cherry on top….well, you could say that I’ve had better days. And there have been many times during this little season of misfortune that I have thrown up my spew-covered hands and said ‘ENOUGH! I can’t take it anymore!! I’m done!!’, only to have another bout of baby-puke dumped on me while my dog runs past the window with a very angry chicken in his jaws.
Yes, life goes on, regardless of whether you’re having a good time or a bad time or a really bad time, and really the only thing we can do is keep on going with it. Preferably with a smile, though – and that’s where this post comes in. I’ve been spending so much time feeling shitty lately that I decided to make a list of ways I could perk myself back up. And then I was like, ‘Hey! Maybe other mama’s or anxiety sufferers or blog frands might benefit from a list like this too!’, except then I realised I might have to make minor adjustments to make my personal feel-good list usable for the real world. I mean, watching Come Dine With Me while I dye the grey out of my hair and eat raw brownie batter might make me feel better, but I’m not 100% sure that everybody would benefit.
So, I’ve made a list of 20 Ways You Can Feel Good Right Now, and I promise that no brownie-batter or grey hair features on this list. (Can’t make any promises about trash TV though…surely I’m not the only one who enjoys watching absolute rubbish on the telly…right guys…?)
20 Ways To Feel Good Right Now
Go for a walk
Have a bubble bath, with candles and a glass of wine or tea and preferably, a good book
Listen to an audiotape or a podcast. I personally really enjoy listening to Esther Hicks or TedTalks – always pretty uplifting!
Watch your favourite trashy TV
Do some gardening, and get your hands dirty
Organize your closet, or bathroom cabinet
Put on some bright colored lipstick
Do some yoga
Go through old photos (Facebook archives generally hold a goldmine of lols)
Ride a bike
Go treat yourself to a cappuccino or hot chocolate and a biscuit. Sit, scoop froth. Enjoy.
Make an inspiration board
Watch a good movie. It’s Complicated or anything with Meryl Streep is my go-to
Dig into a good book
Bake something delicious
Phone a friend. Nobody does this anymore, but it’s amazing what talking to someone can do to lift your spirits
Meditate – guided meditations are good if you’re feeling a bit fried
Declutter (and donate unwanted items!
Play with your furry friend of choice. Teach them a new trick!
I can’t even pick a personal favourite from this list, because every single one of those things makes me feel really, really good. Like I’m talking Ryan-Gosling-just-knocked-on-my-bedroom-door-with-no-pants-on kinda good (Alright, maybe not that good, but we’re not asking for miracles here).
The next time you’re in a bad mood, whether it’s because you’ve just got vom on your last clean t-shirt, or because there’s some kind of sequel to Chicken Run being filmed in your backyard, or a completely different disaster, I hope this list makes you feel better. And hey, even if you aren’t feeling crappy, you shouldn’t need an excuse to do any of the things on this list. Just roll with the punches and feel good my friends, feel good.
